Assessment at a leading NHS Trust

Three NHS Trust funds merged into one new organisation. This resulted in a major restructuring of existing roles throughout the organisation, from Clinical Programme Directors to middle managers. The client required an assessment expert to carry out the assessment of capabilities amongst senior leaders and middle managers in an objective, fair and accurate manner.

We were asked to carry out an in-depth assessment of the leadership capabilities of candidates for the six Clinical Programme Director posts. These leaders were required to demonstrate both outstanding clinical expertise and the management and interpersonal skills required for strong leadership and engagement with the staff.

Our psychologist worked closely with the client’s clinical staff to undertake an in-depth assessment of candidates’ intellectual, interpersonal and personal qualities using a range of psychometric instruments and an in-depth interview with our psychologist. We prepared detailed reports on the strengths of each candidate. The information in these reports was drawn on by the selection panel when carrying out candidate interviews and as an aid to the panel’s final decision making.

Coaching for results

A central government department has implemented a leadership development programme for a number of high potential staff at senior civil servant grades. RFL, as a preferred supplier under the department’s Coaching Framework, has coaches supporting a number of individuals on this leadership programme. Our coaches work with them to identify their developmental needs and support and challenge them to find solutions to enhance their performance.

Our coaches meet these individuals on a monthly basis for an average of one and a half to two hours and using a range of coaching and psychological methodologies, help them make progress towards achieving a clearly identified set of goals.

Results have included amongst others: individuals achieving promotion more rapidly, enhanced focus on achieving key performance deliverables, better engagement with stakeholders, clearer understanding of their role.
